When it comes to music, the Great Depression is widely regarded as one of the most influential times. These and other artists helped to keep jazz alive during the difficult years of the Great Depression. Other important jazz musicians of the 1930s included trumpeter Louis Armstrong, clarinetist Benny Goodman, and saxophonist Coleman Hawkins. Ellington and his band regularly toured the country, appearing at both small clubs and large theaters, and their recordings were widely heard on radio and phonograph. Among the most important of these was pianist and bandleader Duke Ellington, who led one of the most popular and influential jazz bands of the era. During the 1930s, jazz was kept alive by a number of talented musicians, many of whom were based in New York City.
